Q. Do You offer MATS EUS approved courses?
Yes. We offer both MATS Initial Basic Tower Climbing & Rescue and a Renewal course.
EUS (Energy & Utility Skills) collaborate with employers, stakeholders and regulators to support the recruitment, training and upskilling of the energy and utilities sector workforce.
The Mast and Tower Safety (MATS): Basic Tower Climbing & Rescue scheme is a skills-based scheme designed to support the safety of those individuals who work on towers and masts in the telecommunications and broadcast industry. The scheme recognises the skills and underpinning knowledge required to safely and competently climb and undertake rescues from towers and masts.
SpanSet were delighted to gain EUS approval for MATS Tower Climber and Rescue Courses in early 2020
The SpanSet training centre here in Middlewich, Cheshire is an approved EUS site with excellent training facilities and both MATS courses are scheduled regularly throughout 2021.

These include - a latttice mast, open faced tower and monopole, both indoor and outdoor training structures and rooftops, together with state of the art classrooms with smartboard technology. Many of our training instructors have worked in the telecoms and utilities sectors for many years and have a wealth of experience.
Q. What are the criteria to attend the MATS Renewable (1 day) course?
Candidates must have successfully completed the MATS Initial Basic Tower Climbing & Rescue (3 day) course within the last 12 months. Note you are not able to gain access via the Arqiva Gateway scheme if your qualification has expired.
Q. Which SpanSet courses do I need to allow me to access Arqiva sites via the Arqiva Gateway Permit to work?

Q. What other courses do you offer to compliment the climbing based courses and are training packages available?
SpanSet offer a wide range of courses relevant to the Telecoms & Utilities sector which including Lifting and Rigging at Height and Equipment Inspection Courses. With new starters to the telecoms industry in mind, we've just launched a 5 day MATS Passport Package, which includes all the training needed to access and work on tower structures and rooftops.
Q. How fit do I need to be to complete a MATS course?
You need to be physically fit to climb up tall structures – minimum height 10m.
You also need to have had a medical in accordance with MATS Guidance GN005.
