European Standards require all PPE used for work at height, as well as all safety systems, to undergo regular inspections by a competent person.
In the UK, the BS 8437:2005 Code of Practice for the selection, use, and maintenance of personal fall protection systems states in Section 13.1.2 that employers must establish formal inspection procedures.
These procedures ensure that fall protection equipment is thoroughly examined by a competent person before first use, then at intervals of no more than 6 months (or every 3 months if used in harsh conditions), and whenever an incident occurs that may affect safety.
