Documentation of Lashing Strap Inspections

Lashing straps are essential for cargo securing. To ensure their reliability, regular inspections are mandatory. This is not only about protecting the goods being transported, but also about safeguarding drivers and other road users. The European standard EN 12195-2 and the VDI Guideline 2700 Sheet 3.1 form the basis for inspection intervals and documentation.

Obligation to Inspect

The inspection of lashing straps is mandatory.

According to EN 12195-2 “Load restraint assemblies on road vehicles”, manufacturers are obliged to provide operating instructions with each strap. These instructions specify that straps must be inspected regularly.

Especially important: Annex B.11 of EN 12195-2 details the requirements for inspection. If safety-relevant defects are found – such as cuts, frayed webbing, damaged stitching, or defective ratchets – the strap must be immediately withdrawn from service and replaced with a fault-free product.

Inspection Intervals

The European standard itself does not stipulate fixed inspection intervals. However, it explicitly recommends an inspection after each use.
This ensures that damaged straps are not reused, minimizing the risk of accidents.

The VDI Guideline 2700 Sheet 3.1 provides stricter requirements:

  • At least one inspection per year by a qualified expert
  • Depending on frequency of use and load, shorter intervals may be necessary

Documentation Requirements

A written record of inspections is mandatory. This can be done in digital form (e.g. inspection software or RFID systems) or analog (e.g. inspection reports, checklists).

Documentation should include:

  • Clear identification of the lashing straps (e.g. label, serial number, RFID transponder)
  • Date and scope of the inspection
  • Name and qualification of the inspector
  • Detected defects and actions taken

This ensures complete traceability.

Conclusion

The inspection of lashing straps is a legal requirement (EN 12195-2, VDI 2700 Sheet 3.1). While EN 12195-2 defines the general obligation and process, VDI 2700 Sheet 3.1 sets clear requirements for inspection frequency and documentation.
Companies that consistently implement these regulations and train their employees as qualified experts not only improve safety but also protect themselves against legal and financial consequences in the event of damage.
