Sustainable use of materials in intralogistics

Reusable for securing drums

Securing load units consisting of drums and pallets is difficult terrain for suppliers of reusable systems. SpanSet is well aware of this. Nevertheless, the load securing specialist is registering growing interest in the resource-saving BarrelXafe system, particularly in the intralogistics sector.

When it comes to land or sea transport, barrel securing and reusable systems are a poor match. Instead, disposable systems such as simple lashing straps and plastic or metal strapping are very popular.

The reason why drum securing is a typical field for one-way solutions is obvious: the containers are connected to the pallet by the manufacturer or retailer for transport. The recipient often sees no reason to separate the drum and load carrier from each other after the goods have been received. After all, the two form a compact and secure unit, which also proves to be extremely useful during storage. Only when the drum has left the storage area again and arrived at its actual place of use does someone separate the load unit. Unfortunately, he then does not know what to do with the securing material. There are no plans to return it to the sender or to recycle it. So it goes into the residual waste.

High-quality material for long-term use.

This is not in the spirit of sustainable use of raw materials. But unfortunately it is a reality,’ says René Tomaz, Export Manager at SpanSet. However, at least in some areas of drum securing, there is an increasing demand for reusable systems. Namely in intralogistics.

As long as the systems remain within their own area of responsibility, it is easier for companies to establish an environmentally friendly utilisation cycle for their equipment. ‘For some time now, more and more companies have been interested in our sustainable BarrelXafe variant when it comes to in-house transport,’ says Tomaz. ‘You save material and costs in the long run.’

BarrelXafe consists of two high-quality polyester straps and a firmly connected ratchet, as is familiar from load securing. The two strands are spread out under the pallet, joined together in the ratchet on the top of the barrel and then tensioned.

Clear reusable labelling for the straps.

In order to draw the users' attention to the reusable qualities of the system, SpanSet can already label them in the weaving mill with a note such as “reusable”, “drum securing” or “for internal use only”. Branding with a company logo is also possible.

Most people think of liquids when they think of drums. But ropes, chains and other hard-to-handle solid goods are also transported in drums, which makes them much easier to handle.
