At SpanSet Australia, we are proud to have partnered with Midland Industries to design and manufacture a custom load restraint solution for the landmark Snowy 2.0 project, one of Australia’s largest renewable energy initiatives.

The challenge was significant. Each concrete segment weighed 7 tons, with nine segments transported per truck, resulting in a total load of 63 tons. Midland’s innovative approach reduced the number of trips from 45,000 to just 15,000, but it required a world-class load restraint system to ensure every segment was safely secured, even in alpine conditions with temperatures dropping below -20°C.

SpanSet designed the solution using our MaXafe 55mm load restraint system, initially testing it in real-life applications. The MaXafe system features high-strength webbing with excellent elongation control and durability, making it ideal for heavy, uneven loads. Its robust construction ensures reliable tensioning and long service life, even in harsh conditions. Through careful observation and engineering, we refined the system to eliminate any potential wear and tear issues, delivering a final solution that has performed exceptionally well in this unique scenario. Visual indicators and audible alerts in the truck cab notify the driver immediately if the load shifts, allowing them to stop safely and re-secure the cargo.

This project highlights SpanSet’s ability to engineer unique, heavy-haulage solutions tailored to specific client challenges. Every MaXafe system is designed and manufactured in Australia at our Emu Plains facility, combining precision engineering with world-class manufacturing standards. By collaborating closely with Midland, we have demonstrated that Australian-made design solutions are among the best in the world, setting a benchmark for innovation, safety, and reliability.
