Fall Arrest and Worker Weight - why compromise safety?

Working at height demands equipment you can trust — and one of the most commonly overlooked factors is worker weight.

Modern work realities mean that a person’s true working weight is often far higher than their body weight alone. Heavy winter clothing, PPE, radios, batteries, large tool belts, specialist equipment and accessories can easily add 10–20kg or more.

As a result, fully equipped workers can exceed 100kg (15+ stone) without realising it.

Yet a large proportion of fall arrest lanyards on the market are still certified only to 100kg, creating a potential safety gap — especially for heavier workers or those carrying significant equipment.

50-150KG

Worker Weight and Fall Arrest Equipment

All work at height harnesses are rated to EN361 with a minimum breaking strength of 1,500kg, more than enough for the heaviest worker. This leads many to assume:

“If the harness is strong enough, I’m safe.”

The reality:  It's not the harness that is the issue here - it's the lanyard the harness is attached to!

Many Lanyards Aren't Rated for Today's Workforce

The lanyard’s shock absorber controls the forces during a fall, and if a worker (including tools and PPE) exceeds the lanyard’s rating, it may:

  • Deploy incorrectly
  • Generate excessive impact forces
  • Fail to protect the user

For heavier or fully equipped workers, a lanyard rated only to 100kg may not perform safely. And since weighing workers on-site is impractical, specifying equipment with a higher rating is the safest approach.

Don't Guess -

Specify the right equipment

Ask yourself:

  • Are my workers not exceeding 100kg once fully equipped?
  • Are my lanyards certified for their true working weight?

If the answer isn't a confident YES - then it's time to review your equipment.
