FAQ Ratchet Lashing

What Is Ratchet Lashing?

Ratchet lashing, also commonly known as a ratchet tie down, is a securing tool made from high-strength polyester webbing, equipped with a ratchet tensioning mechanism and hooks.

This tool is used to secure loads on various modes of transportation such as trucks, cars, ships, or trains, helping prevent shifting or damage during transit.

What Are the Advantages of Using Ratchet Lashing Compared to Regular Rope?

The main advantages of using ratchet lashing include:

  • Higher safety: Ensures the load is tightly secured and does not loosen easily, even when subjected to vibrations or movement.
  • Efficiency: Quick to install and easy to tighten.
  • Does not damage the cargo: The elastic, tear-resistant polyester material does not scratch or damage the items being secured, unlike wire or rope that may leave marks.
  • Durability: Made from strong, long-lasting materials, suitable for repeated use.

What Types of Ratchet Lashing Are Available?

There are several types of ratchet lashing based on design and load capacity:

  • By Design:
Two-part lashing: Comes with two ends equipped with hooks and a ratchet buckle in the middle, suitable for securing cargo to anchor points.
Endless type: A closed-loop (O-shaped) strap without hooks, used by wrapping the webbing around the load and tightening it.
  • By Capacity:
Available in various load capacities, ranging from “hobby” types (around 500 kg) for motorcycles/cars, up to heavy-duty types that can withstand loads up to 10 tons for industrial and logistics use.
  • By Hook Type:
Comes with multiple hook options such as CL Hook, S Hook, Delta Hook, D-ring, and J-hook to match different anchor points.

How to Use Ratchet Lashing Properly?

  1. Here are the general steps for proper use:
  2. Inspect the ratchet lashing to ensure there is no damage.
  3. Attach the hooks to the anchor points on the vehicle (if using the two-part type).
  4. Wrap or loop the strap around the load.
  5. Insert the end of the strap into the ratchet mechanism.
  6. Pull the strap tight, then pump the ratchet handle up and down to add tension.
  7. Lock the ratchet handle by pushing it down until it is fully closed.
  8. Ensure the strap is straight and not twisted so the load is properly distributed.
  9. Roll up any excess strap to prevent it from loosening or becoming a hazard.

How Do You Release a Ratchet Lashing?

To release the strap, simply pull the release lever in the center of the ratchet upward until it is fully straightened or open, then pull the strap to loosen the tension.

Does Ratchet Lashing Require Special Maintenance?

Yes, maintenance is necessary to ensure its durability.

Regularly inspect the physical condition of the webbing and the ratchet mechanism. Make sure there are no tears, wear, or damage to the metal components.

Store it in a dry place to prevent rust or damage caused by excessive exposure to the elements.
